Body

MRQ Mackay was the first of two squadrons to transition into Marine Rescue Queensland on 1 July 2024, becoming the service’s inaugural units - but our story begins much earlier, when we began operation in 1965 as Mackay Air and Sea Rescue. MRQ Mackay team members in front of the squadron building

Operational area

Our operational area extends seaward from the Mackay Marina, north to Cape Conway and Shaw Island in a straight-line east to the inner reefs, then south to Carmila in a straight line to the Percy Group of Islands, extending in an arc, with a radius of approx. 120NM.

This includes all islands and the inner-to-outer reef of the Great Barrier Reef within the northern and southern boundaries. We also cover all the inshore creeks if they have boat ramp and tidal access.

Most of our activations depart from the Mackay Marina, but we have capability for our smaller vessels to tow to boat ramps within the region to improve response times and safety of the crew. This is dependent on the sea conditions.

Our base next to the boat ramp in the Mackay Marina is open 7 days a week and our skippers and vessels are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year for emergency and waterside assistance activations.

The radio room operates 7 days a week, from 8am – 6pm and monitors emergency channels 16 and 67. Weather reports are available on request during our operating hours, and we also have information about recreational boating activities and GBRMPA zone maps.

Safety tips

Remember to always follow the marine safety rules and Log On and Log Off via our unit or VHF radio. The information you provide when logging on can be critical in helping us to find you as fast as possible if you need assistance. It’s also a good habit to always tell people of your plans when heading out on the water.

VHF radio range is approx. 35nm radius from the repeater. Be aware your radio strength, aerial height, and weather conditions can affect radio range.

Volunteer with MRQ Mackay

We are a wholly volunteer managed squadron and we’re always looking for new members to join us. There are many ways you can contribute – from participating as part of rescue vessel crews and skippers, working as a radio room operator, assisting with administration, training and assessments, or maintenance – or working as part of our management committee. You’ll receive training and support along the way and know that you are providing a vital community service through your efforts.

Come in and have a chat and see what we are about. Apply to become a volunteer with MRQ Mackay or find out more about volunteering opportunities.

Our community

We participate in search and rescue operations, coordinated by the Whitsunday Water police, and work with the Queensland Ambulance Service, Queensland Fire Department, Mackay Airport Fire and Rescue, BMA CQ rescue helicopter and the SES on activations and training exercises.

MRQ Mackay operates in conjunction with local VMR and AVCGA units to provide support to the boating community. If you require support when travelling in the region outside our area, contact VMR Midge Point or QF24 Thirsty Sound

Support our activities

We are a Queensland Government supported service, but your donations allow us to enhance our services and support to the local community. Make a donation to MRQ and include instructions for your donation to be applied to MRQ Mackay.
