Body

MRQ Currumbin operates from Currumbin Creek on the southern Gold Coast, primarily servicing an offshore area up to 50nm to the east between Point Danger on the QLD / NSW border and the Gold Coast Seaway at the Southport Spit.

The unit has more than 50 years operational experience, starting from a meeting in 1969 between local licensees of the original Currumbin Hotel and the creation of Air Sea Rescue Currumbin in 1970, through to the delivery of the first vessel and tow vehicle in 1971, and building of a boatshed, club rooms, and boatramp in 1972. Their current location was built in 1980 and expanded in 2002.

Today the members of MRQ Currumbin continue this proud history of bravery and dedication to their local boating community by providing a daily radio listening watch on all emergency marine radio frequencies and visual watch over Currumbin Bar between the hours of 0500 – 1230.

The team are here to respond to calls for assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week when required and work closely with local emergency services like the Gold Coast Water Police, Gold Coast City Council Lifeguards and Surf Lifesaving Qld.

MRQ Currumbin operates in conjunction with local VMR and AVCGA units to provide support to the boating community in the south-east corner. If you require support when travelling north of Currumbin, contact QF 1 – Southport or VMR Southport

Remember to always follow the marine safety rules and continue to Log On and Log Off via your local unit or VHF radio

Apply to become a volunteer with MRQ Currumbin or find out more about volunteering opportunities. Public safety is our top priority. To avoid disruption to marine rescue services to our community, VMR and AVCGA will transition to MRQ in phases from July 2024.
